Lava has been flowing above a hotspot in the earths crust that has moved little over the past 80 million years. Located in the middle of the largest of the earths tectonic plates, the Pacific Plate is moving toward Japan at a fairly steady pace of over 3 inches per year. As this plate moves over the hotspot new islands are formed. The Big Island of Hawaii is the newest of long line of islands. It is the only place in Hawaii where active lava flows can be seen.
