The summer in Hawaii has seen a surge in visitors and also a surge in hotel rates. Many visitors were disappointed with what the hotels provided. Know what to expect when booking a hotel for the fall for your Hawaii vacation.

Hotel rates surged to close to 2019 levels. Visitors were greeted with high prices yet reduced amenities. While occupancy is up, Hawaii’s largest hospitality workers union reports only 62% of its members have returned to work. That doesn’t bode well for service or supporting workers.

Call your hotel before booking so you know what services they are providing. For example:
- Limited or no room service. Pay $800 a night to take out your own trash
- Restricted pool and hot tub access
- No valet, baggage service, etc.
- Closed restaurants and snack bars, means more crowded open ones.

Hotel rates are falling come September, as they have done historically. During the summer, Oahu, mainly Waikiki, had the lowest hotel rates of any island. 7% cheaper than 2019. Highest: the other islands saw sky-high room rates, 21% to 43% higher than 2019. Big Island seeing the highest increase.
