- The Hawaii rental car shortage continues into late summer.
- Do you have a trip in 2 weeks? You may not be able to book a car with a national rental car company. Islands continue to be sold out.
- If you find a car, expect to pay $150 to $200 a day as a good rate
- As with the rest of the country, car rental companies reduced their fleets during the pandemic and can’t replenish inventory due to the chip shortage. 80% higher rates are the norm across the country, Hawaii is no different.
- You will have better luck booking a month in advance as cars are still available in September, as the summer winds down.
- Tips for the rental car shortage:
- Don’t get a car: hotel shuttles and public transport
- Book local. Call the local car rental shops
- Be flexible. Don’t book a car for your full stay, just a few days when a car is available.
